So, let’s get down to business.
There are a few steps that you have to follow when you want to create your blog. A quick summary is given here for your convenience.
First of all, you’d have to choose a host. Hosting is having your own little personal space in the online world. You buy this space and register it to your website’s name and voila! You now have an independent internet space designated just for your use. Now, do you do this by yourself, or do you choose a company that does it for you? The answer is, you buy this service from a hosting company like Hostgator.
Secondly, you choose a domain and register it.
Finally, start posting and inch closer towards achieving your goal.
Well then, the above 4 points are just a summary of what you need to do. Now let’s get into the details.
How to build a blog using Hostgator?
Step 1: Choosing a host:
Hostgator has several shared hosting plans. Shared hosting plans mean that your data is stored in a shared server. That is, it will be a shared server for more than one person. There are a lot of service packages that Hostgator has in their armory. However, you need to pick one that best suits your need and therefore, here we share some of the plans of Hostgator.
As you can see, there are packages for all budgets. The hatchling plan is the cheapest starter pack that you can get. It will give you only one domain and unmetered bandwidth. However, it does not contain SSL. This package is enough if you’re starting from scratch and will maintain one website only. However, if you’re an already established business and require to manage several sites to carry on with your venture correctly, then you may want to look at the other two plans that are the baby plan and the business plan. These two plans will give you unlimited domains with unmetered bandwidth. However, for SSL, you will have to choose the Business plan.
The baby plan is the most grossing one as you can run multiple blogs on it. Hostgator’s plans come with unlimited storage and email addresses. There’s also a drag and drop website builder, and therefore you can build the website without the help of any web designer. The whole system is a ‘what you see is what you get’ deal.
Once you’ve chosen a deal, click on the sign up now button and follow the rest of the instructions.
Step 2: Register a Domain:
Well, considering you have bought your hosting plan, it’s time to choose a domain name and register it. You can choose any domain name but it must be unique as it will be your virtual address, the place online where everyone can find you. Therefore, make sure it’s uncommon so that the address does not already exist. Once you’re done selecting a unique domain name, you should now register it.
Step 3: Complete Purchase:
Hostgator offers all sorts of add-ons for professional marketers. However, if you’re someone just starting, you won’t need these add-ons. And by opting out of these addons, you can save yourself some money too. So, once you’ve chosen your package, selected a domain for registration, and opted in or out of the additional services, it’s time for you to finally checkout. So, click on checkout and make sure to agree to the terms and conditions beforehand.
Step 4: Getting started with the thematics of your blog:
Select the hosting URL you just purchased from the dropdown that appears after clicking on ‘hosting.’
Once you’ve selected the URL, you’ll see a dashboard with a lot of options to choose. These options will include a lot of services that Hostgator offers such as WordPress services, sitelock service, Google, and Bing credits for advertisement, etc. It also provides Cloud Desktop Storage facilities.
Once you see this dashboard, you can get started with WordPress from here.
Step 5: Setting up WordPress:
Set up your user account for WordPress, then move on to the next step. And don’t worry, you can change these settings later on. In admin email, type in your email address and Blog title, type in the title of your blog page that people will see. Again, nothing to worry about as these can be changed later on.
Click on Install WordPress and move on to the next step.
Step 6: Logging into WordPress:
Once you have successfully installed WordPress, wait for a prompt to appear just beside the sentence “Your Installation is Complete.” The prompt will read ‘View Credentials.’ Click on it, and a dropdown will appear. In this dropdown, you’ll find a link to the ‘Admin Area’ of WordPress for your blog site and a username and auto-generated password for that admin area. Note them down or copy them.
Next, move on to the Admin Area by clicking on the link and then type in the email and password noted before. Click on login and voila! You’ve successfully logged in to WordPress.
Step 7: Publishing the first post:
Ok, next to today’s article on How to build a blog, we will talk about publishing your first post. As illustrated the picture above, on the left-hand side, there are a lot of options to click. So, you click on ‘post’ and then ‘add new’ and voila! You’ll see a new box on your screen where you input the blog post, including the title.
